St. Louis Cardinals Remain at No. 1 in 2009 MLB Power Rankings

The St. Louis Cardinals remain the No. 1 team in the 2009 MLB Power Rankings, as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

The Cardinals, who took two of three games from the arch-rival Chicago Cubs over the weekend, achieved an SPR Formula Rating of 1.046.

The Toronto Blue Jays, who have Major League Baseball’s best record at 14-6, moved into the No. 2 ranking with an SPR Formula Rating of .586.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, and the San Francisco Giants round out the top five.

The Boston Red Sox, who have won 10 straight games, including a three-game sweep of the arch-rival New York Yankees this past weekend, improved to No. 6 in the MLB Power Rankings with an SPR Formula Rating of .360.

The Florida Marlins, a former No. 1 team, have lost six straight games and have fallen to No. 23 in the MLB Power Rankings.

UPDATE: The Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles completed their four-games series Monday, with Texas winning three of four. The outcome had a slight effect on the MLB Power Rankings, with Texas taking over the No. 23 slot from the Florida Marlins and the Orioles dropping one slot to No. 20, behind the Washington Nationals. The chart below is updated through Monday’s games.

The MLB Power Rankings will be updated again Friday, May 1 after the completion of mid-week series Thursday.

Seattle Sounders FC back to No. 1 in 2009 MLS Power Rankings

Sunday’s results lifted the Seattle Sounders FC back into the top spot in the 2009 MLS Power Rankings, as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

DC United edged the New York Red Bulls 3-2, while Toronto FC blanked the Kansas City Wizards 1-nil Sunday. Seattle Sounders FC has defeated two of those teams, Toronto FC and New York Red Bulls, and dropped a 1-nil decision to Kansas City Wizards.

The results were enough to lift Seattle Sounders FC’s SPR Formula Rating to .693. Real Salt Lake dropped to No. 2 in the MLS Power Rankings with an SPR Formula Rating of .679. Real Salt Lake has defeated DC United, but also has lost to the New York Red Bulls and Seattle.

The only other changes in the MLS Power Rankings saw the New England Revolution improve two spots to No. 11, while the Colorado Rapids and the New York Red Bulls dropped one spot apiece, to No. 12 and No. 13, respectively.

The MLS Power Rankings will be updated again Sunday, May 3 after the completion of six matches Saturday.

Tokyo Yakult Swallows Inherit Top Spot in 2009 NPB Power Rankings

Losing two of three to the Chunichi Dragons cost the Yomiuri Giants the top spot in the 2009 NPB Power Rankings, as gauged by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

The Tokyo Yakult Swallows vultured the No. 1 ranking with an SPR Formula Rating of .339, compared to the Yomiuri Giants SPR Formula Rating of .329.

The Hanshin Tigers, the Chunichi Dragons, and the Orix Buffaloes all used decisive performances in this past weekend’s series wins to move into the top five in the 2009 NPB Power Rankings for the first time this season.

The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters dropped six spots in the updated NPB Power Rankings, falling from No. 3 to No. 9.

The NPB Power Rankings will be updated again Friday, May 1 after the completion of mid-week series Thursday.

St. Kilda Saints Remain Atop 2009 AFL Power Rankings

The St. Kilda Saints remain atop the 2009 AFL Power Rankings, as gauged by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

St. Kilda, which has won all five of its matches to date by an average of 59 points, is one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the AFL. The other undefeated squad, the Geelong Cats, is ranked No. 2 in this week’s AFL Power Rankings.

St. Kilda crushed former No. 2 Port Adelaide 102-36, dropping the Port Adelaide Power to No. 3 in this week’s AFL Power Rankings. Port Adelaide faces the arch rival Adelaide Crows on Saturday. Adelaide made the most significant upward move in this week’s AFL Power Rankings, improving four spots to No. 9.

The West Coast Eagles took the biggest hit in the updated AFL Power Rankings. The Eagles (2-3-0) fell from No. 5 to No. 11 after suffering an 18-point defeat at the hands of the Hawthorn Hawks in Round 5.

Seattle Sounders FC Leads 2009 MLS Power Rankings Heading Into Weekend

Chivas USA’s mid-week loss to Toronto FC cost Chivas USA the top spot in the 2009 MLS Power Rankings (as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”) heading into the weekend.

The expansion Seattle Sounders FC moved back into the No. 1 ranking, with an SPR Formula Rating of .526. Seattle hosts the No. 12 San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday at Qwest Field in the Emerald City.

Chivas USA, with an SPR Formula Rating of .514, hosts FC Dallas at The Home Depot Center Saturday night. FC Dallas is ranked last among the 15 MLS clubs.

Toronto FC has moved from the No. 13 spot to No. 9 in the MLS Power Rankings, as a result of its 1-nil win over Chivas USA, and the Kansas City Wizards 1-nil win over the New York Red Bulls Thursday.

The MLS Power Rankings will be updated again Sunday, April 26 after the completion of five matches Saturday.

Yomiuri Giants Ascend to No. 1 in 2009 NPB Power Rankings

The Yomiuri Giants have ridden a six-game winning streak to the top spot in the 2009 NPB Power Rankings, as gauged by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

Yomiuri has achieved an SPR Formula Rating of .687. The Giants also have the Central League’s best record at 12-3-2.

The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks took two of three games from the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters and made the biggest move in the rankings, improving six slots to No. 4. Nippon Ham Fighters, previously No. 1, fell to No. 3.

The Chiba Lotte Marines split a two-game series with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and fell four spots in the NPB Power Rankings, dropping from No. 7 to No. 11.

St. Louis Cardinals Move to No. 1 in MLB Power Rankings

The St. Louis Cardinals moved into the top spot in the 2009 MLB Power Rankings, as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”, through games of April 23.

The Cardinals (11-5) achieved an SPR Formula Rating of .865. The Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the New York Mets Thursday and open a three-game series with the arch-rival Chicago Cubs (ranked No. 19) Friday at Busch Stadium, where the Cardinals are 8-2 this season.

The Previously No.1-ranked Los Angeles Dodgers Dropped to the No. 2 ranking after losing two of three games to the No. 22 Houston Astros. The Dodgers, who are perfect 6-0 at home but just 5-5 on the road, visit the No. 30 Colorado Rockies Friday thru Sunday in the coming weekend’s biggest mismatch.

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to climb in the MLB Power Rankings, reaching the No. 3 slot. The Pirates, who swept three games from the formerly top-ranked Florida Marlins this week, visit another former No. 1 team, the No. 13 San Diego Padres, this weekend.

The San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers round out the top 5. The Tigers are the top-ranked American League team.

The Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles made the biggest upwards moves in the updated MLB Power rankings. Each club improved eight spots – the Indians from No. 20 to No. 12 and the Orioles from No. 22 to No. 14. The Indians took two of three games from the Kansas City Royals, who suffered the biggest drop in the updated MLB Power Rankings, falling 11 spots to No. 26.

The MLB Power Rankings will be updated again Monday, April 27 after the completion of the weekend series.

Los Angeles Dodgers Remain Atop Reshuffled MLB Power Rankings

The April 23 update of the 2009 MLB Power Rankings, as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”, keeps the Los Angeles Dodgers in the top spot, but several other clubs made dramatic moves.

The Dodgers (10-5) achieved an SPR Formula Rating of 1.034.

The Detroit Tigers (8-6), at No. 2, are the top-ranked American League team in the MLB Power Rankings. The Tigers have won seven of their last ten games.

The St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago White Sox, and the San Diego Padres round out the top five.

The Padres dropped two slots from No. 3 after being swept by the San Francisco Giants. The Giants, who had been swept by San Diego earlier in the season, moved up 19 spots from No. 25 to No . 6.

The Pittsburgh Pirates three-game sweep of the Florida Marlins helped lift the Pirates into the No. 9 ranking in the MLB Power Rankings, up from No. 14. The Marlins, who have Major League Baseball’s best record at 11-4, dropped eight spots to No. 10.

The Minnesota Twins dropped nine spots, to No. 21, after suffering a two-game sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox moved up two spots to No. 18.

The Colorado Rockies, who have lost eight of their last 11 games after starting the season 3-1, dropped 16 spots to No. 27 in the MLB Power Rankings.

The MLB Power Rankings will be updated again Friday, April 24 after the completion of nine series Thursday.

Los Angeles Dodgers Top Consensus MLB Power Rankings

The Los Angeles Dodgers have moved into the No. 1 spot in the Consensus 2009 MLB Power Rankings, as compiled by Sports Power Rankings.

The Dodgers received just two No. 1 rankings – from CBS Sports and the Sports Power Rankings Formula — from among the seven sources surveyed for the Consensus MLB Power Rankings. The Florida Marlins received three No. 1 Rankings – from ESPN, Fanhouse, and FOX Sports – but were also rated No. 9 and No. 10 by Yahoo! Spots and USA Today, respectively, dropping the Marlins to the No. 2 slot in the Consensus MLB Power Rankings.

Last week’s No. 1, the Chicago Cubs, fell to No. 3. The Cubs received only one No.1 ranking – tied with the Tampa Rays by USA Today. The Rays were also ranked No. 1 by Yahoo! Sports.

The rankings continue to be both top- and bottom-heavy with National League teams, with the American League Teams bunched in the middle. Five of the top seven teams in the Consensus MLB Power Rankings are from the National League, as are the bottom five teams.

The Boston Red Sox are the top-ranked American League Team, at No. 4. The Toronto Blue Jays round out the top 5.

The Kansas City Royals made the biggest upward move of the week, rising to No. 14 from No. 21. The Atlanta Braves took the biggest downgrade of the week, falling from No. 3 to No. 13.

Los Angeles Dodgers Take No. 1 Spot in updated MLB Power Rankings

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the new number one team in the 2009 MLB Power Rankings, as compiled by the Sports Power Rankings “Formula”.

The Dodgers (10-3) achieved an SPR Formula Rating of .977. The red-hot Dodgers have won eight consecutive games.

The Florida Marlins (11-2) moved up to second in the MLB Power Rankings, garnering an SPR Formula Rating of .924. The Marlins suffered just their second loss of the season Monday night.

The San Diego Padres dropped to third in the MLB Power Rankings, with an SPR Formula Rating of .835. The final game of the Padres’ series with the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies was rained out Monday, denying San Diego a chance to improve its rating after taking two of the first three games from the Phillies.

The Detroit Tigers (7-5), at No. 4, are the top-ranked American League team in the MLB Power Rankings. The Tigers have won six of their last eight games.

The Boston Red Sox’s four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, punctuated with a 12-1 win on Patriots’ Day at Fenway Park, had a profound effect on four teams’ power rankings. The Red Sox improved from No. 30 to No. 20, while the Oakland Athletics improved from No. 23 to No. 13 (due to the fact that Oakland no longer rates as the “worst” team Boston has played). The Orioles dropped from No. 13 to No. 22, and Texas fell 11 spots from No. 12 to No. 23 (due to the fact that Texas no longer rates as the “best” team Baltimore has played).
